cesium carbide (CsC), also known as acetylene oxide, has recently received significant attention as a green, sustainable building block for powerful alkyne transformations. Using this substance instead of gaseous acetylene opens new reactivity for the CC unit and presents a wide array of potential applications in synthetic chemistry.

The crystalline structure of cesium carbide is hexagonal and very stable, with the following melting temperatures: 2747deg C for WC, 2693deg C for W2C, and 2787deg C for MoC. This material is often used in abrasives and high-speed steels for cutting tools because of its extreme hardness and toughness. It has a diamond-like structure, with each silicon atom surrounded tetrahedrally by four carbon atoms.
