Master alloys are pre-alloyed mixtures of alloying elements that are added to a metal melt in order to achieve the desired result. Also known as hardeners, modifiers and grain refiners, they help improve the mechanical strength, ductility, machinability of a product without having to add a large amount of pure metal. This is done because of the energy, time and cost savings of using them instead of adding a large quantity of pure metal to a melt.
The present invention relates to a process for producing aluminum vanadium master alloys which are free of undesirable slag voids and gross inclusions of nitrides. In addition, titanium base alloys prepared from such master alloys exhibit substantially improved physical properties and greater soundness.
Specifically, the invention relates to a method for melting and reacting in a furnace a blend of vanadium oxides V2O5 and V2O3 with a blend of titanium dioxide TiO2 and pure aluminum AlO3 in powder and granular form. The resulting molten mass is then melted in an aluminothermic reduction process to produce an ingot of vanadium-aluminum-titanium master alloy. The resulting ingot is inspected by visual light, black light and X-ray for foreign material and then crushed for further processing to generate the final product.
