Lithium acetate is a salt of lithium and acetic acid. This salt is commonly abbreviated as LiOAc and is a key component of lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles.
The salt is soluble in water and can be used as an electrolyte solution for battery cell manufacturing. It has a high specific heat and thermal conductivity and is an ideal anode material for lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium acetate hydrate is an ideal buffer for DNA and RNA gel electrophoresis due to its low electrical conductivity and ability to be run at higher speeds than can gels made from TAE buffer (which has a much lower conductivity of 5-30 V/cm). The lower electrical conductivity also allows the gel to be run at a faster rate when heat generation causes the voltage to be increased, fastening the electrophoresis process.
Lithium acetate is also used to permeabilize yeast cells for DNA transformation, which is beneficial because of its chemical chaotropic effect, denaturing both DNA and RNA molecules. This effect is believed to be brought about by disrupting the hydrogen bonding network in water molecules.
