Natural forms of mercury are metallic mercury, mercuric sulfide and mercuric chloride. They can be transformed into organic mercury by micro-organisms.
These compounds can cause a range of health problems. Specifically, they are toxic to the human body and can cause chronic and acute poisoning.
In addition, some organic forms of mercury are able to be absorbed into the skin and mucous membranes. These soluble mercury salts can also damage the kidneys, causing acute poisoning.
Some of the products that contain elemental or metallic mercury include glass thermometers, mercury dental fillings, button batteries and fluorescent light bulbs. However, mercury has become more and more widely replaced by safer options. In some clinical environments, mercury thermometers and sphygmomanometers have been phased out in favor of alcohol or galinstan filled glass thermometers and thermistor based electronic instruments.
