nickel peroxide is a chemical compound, nickel (Ni) oxide with the formula NiO(OH). It is an oxidizing agent and an important catalyst in the production of acrylates from acetylene and alcohols. American Elements produces nickel peroxide to many standard grades when applicable, including Mil Spec (military grade), ACS, Reagent and Technical Grade; Food, Agricultural and Pharmaceutical Grade; USP and EP/BP (European Pharmacopoeia/British Pharmacopoeia) grade. Nickel compounds are carcinogenic to humans and animals. The oxides form nitric acid which in turn reacts with DNA bases and causes chemical modifications of the nucleobases. This results in two new isomers, 2-hydroxyadenine and 2-deoxyadenine. This reaction is accelerated by hydrogen peroxide. Nickel oxide is also known to cause irritation of the nasal cavities and respiratory tract, bronchitis and skin allergies.

In situ chemical functionalization and nano-composite formation methods have been applied to fabricate a nickel oxide encapsulated polypyrrole (NiO-en-PPy) nano-composite with aligned crystallinity, interactive surface and enhanced electrical conductivity of 10-3 times as compared to that of pristine polypyrrole. The characterization of the samples by FT-IR, Raman, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy revealed that a highly stable and chemically responsive nickel oxide/polypyrrole nano-composite was obtained. The results showed that the improved electrochemical performance of the samples correlated well with the occurrence of different types of nickel functionalities in the nano-composite. Moreover, the selectivity towards hydrogen peroxide production was found to correlate with the morphology and particle size of the nickel-decorated reduced graphene oxide.
